Travis worked his way down the mountain at an angle. He didn’t expect to find anything of value in the wrecked hovercraft, and it certainly wouldn’t work, that much was obvious. So he bypassed it. But his mind was considering all the possibilities. The assassins had come from up the mountain, which made a great place to hunt from, but not necessarily a good place to hide their ship. Travis was certain they had landed after him, probably in the night. And finding a place to land in the dark wouldn’t have been easy. The bottom of the volcanic mountain made the most sense. Travis didn’t know how many days it would take to hike around it, but he hoped he would find the hitmen’s spacecraft along the beach somewhere.

When he finally reached the beach, he was relieved to be able to pick up the pace without worrying about falling and getting hurt. The climb down was uneventful, but tiring. When he got to the beach, he stopped long enough to drink a little melted snow that he had packed into a cup he picked up from the rubble around the complex. Iona’s estate on the side of the volcano was ruined, but there was still a lot of usable material. Travis had picked up a cup, packed it with snow, then carried it down the mountain. When he reached the bottom, half the snow had melted. The water tasted like scorched metal, and probably wasn’t very clean, but it was all he had. Then he started the long hike through the basalt sand. It was a clear but cold day. The wind off the water was bitter, and made his nose drip. By noon he was exhausted and frozen. He was also hungry and thirsty. The water lapping along the shore was saltwater, and completely undrinkable. But it only made his thirst seem that much worse. He pushed himself to keep moving. By early afternoon his legs were cramping, and there was no sign of a ship of any kind. In the late afternoon he started looking for a place to rest for the night.

He found a spot behind a large boulder right at the base of the mountain that was mostly dry. The wind was blocked by more rocks and the mountain itself. Not that Travis planned to spend much time sleeping, but he needed to rest. Once the sun went down things got really cold. Travis curled up behind the big boulder and slept for nearly two hours. The cold woke him up, and the only way to get warm was to move his body, despite being exhausted. He got up, returned to the beach, then walked for one hundred paces. Then he stopped, activated the night vision on the assault rifle’s scope, and glassed the mountain for any signs of movement, or a ship. Finding nothing, he walked another hundred paces in the semi-darkness. Both of Loco Dorado’s moons were out and bright. The light reflected off the waves, and off the snow around the upper half of the mountain.
